Think about your current goal(s), what are they and when did you set them for yourself? Are you a person that is constantly setting new goals for themselves because something new and shiny popped up or are you still honoring the goal(s) you set for yourself last week, month, or year?
In this blog, I’m going to discuss the importance of honoring your past goal(s) and seeing them through to completion.
Why do we set goals for ourselves in the first place? We set specific goals because we want to better ourselves in some way. We want to grow and improve and live better and happier lives. We set these goals for ourselves for a reason, because in a moment, we felt lack, like we could be doing more or have more, so we set out to achieve something incredible! The moment we set a specific goal for ourselves there is a spark of inspiration, hope, and excitement for the future!
So when goals die, it’s a heartbreaking moment, you had set those past goals for a reason, it was something you truly desired for yourself at one point in time so if you stop before you achieve that goal of yours it’s sad, it breaks down your spirit, and it causes you to lose faith in yourself and lose hope for your future.
Most goals take months to accomplish, which is why a lot of people give up on their goal(s) before they reach them because something newer and shiner intervened so they gave up on one goal to pursue another. Do you know how dangerous that is? To jump from thing to thing to thing, I’ll tell you from experience, that jumpers don’t achieve anything. They start a lot of cool stuff, but never see it through to completion which means they never really accomplish anything.
I have a new and exciting goal for myself, to attend Liberty University and earn my master’s degree in pastoral counseling with a minor in life coaching. How cool is that? Just talking about it excites me! Well, when I was telling my sister about this new goal of mine, she asked me if I was going to start working on it right away! I told her no, I was currently working on my goal to pay off my car. If all went well, I’d pay off my car by November, 2025 and could apply and hopefully start school in June, 2026. Could I stop paying $2,000.00 towards my car every month and use that money for school instead? Absolutely! So why not do it if you’re so excited about this new goal of yours? Well, if I don’t honor or achieve my past goals, then I’m not likely to honor or achieve my future goals either and I don’t want that for myself.
I honor and cherish every single goal that I set for myself, regardless of how boring the goal may seem, regardless of what new-shiny things come my way, regardless of how long they’ll take me to achieve and regardless of how hard they may be to accomplish! My past self set these goals for a reason, because she saw a need for change, she knew we could push ourselves harder in some way, she had specific hopes and visions for our future and I will honor that and so should you.
All of my past goals took months, if not years to accomplish! Goal one, to compete in a bodybuilding competition, that took about six months or more to accomplish. Second, to earn my bachelor’s degree in mathematics, that took me six years to accomplish! Writing a book, that took me over a year. A smaller, more random goal that I had for myself was to run three miles in 30 minutes, which literally took me years to accomplish, but I never gave up on the goal and finally achieved it in 2024! If I had given up on these goals in order to pursue different goals, jumping around from thing to thing to thing, then I never would have accomplished anything!
Honor your past and current goals, see them through to completion. If something new and exciting comes up, hold onto the idea for a while. Something may seem really exciting at the moment, but if you wait and think about it for a week or two before making any real decisions or changes, you’ll probably find that you don’t really want to go down that path. If you do, if you’re still excited about the idea, then understand you don’t have to start chasing it right away, you can finish what you’re working on now and come back to it when the time’s right!
I’ve honestly been talking about getting my master’s degree for years now, but that’s all it was, talk. Then the idea grew and the desire grew and I became more and more serious about the idea and it was at this point that the idea officially became a new goal of mine, but again, I won’t pursue this goal until I’ve accomplished some of my current/ past ones first!
Keep your tunnel vision, keep working on your past and current goals, don’t change or add anything new until you’ve fully completed or achieved these goals for yourself first!
I try to really take my time when making decisions or setting new goals for myself because I know that if I commit to something, there’s a 99.9% chance I’m going to see it through to completion. I’m not a flake, I do what I say I’m going to do, I show up when I say I will, and I accomplish everything I set out to do. This isn’t bragging, it’s my character, and we all have the ability to be this way, we just have to choose it!
You have to choose to show up, choose to stick to your plans and your goals regardless of how hard it is, choose to honor and challenge yourself. We can all do it, we’re all capable of setting and achieving incredible goals for ourselves, but we need to stop jumping around from thing to thing. Pick something and commit. Scary, I know, but worth it!
If you’re having trouble committing and/ or staying focused, let me know, I can help! Until then, stay focused, keep working and happy tracking!
